If you live in or around Playa Flamenca, you may have noticed something rather unexpected happening on a large plot of land between Calle Arco Iris and Calle Victoria.
It isn’t another block of apartments.
It isn’t a new hotel.
And it certainly isn’t another golf course.
It’s cricket.
Plans are underway for a major new cricket facility on a site measuring around 28,000 square metres, and the project is already generating plenty of conversation among residents of Orihuela Costa. Reports suggest the facility could become one of the largest cricket venues in Europe.
For an area famous for its beaches, golf courses, restaurants and Mediterranean lifestyle, a large-scale cricket ground might seem like an unusual addition.
But perhaps it isn’t quite as surprising as it first appears.
Why Cricket in Orihuela Costa?
Walk around Orihuela Costa during the summer and you’ll quickly realise that this is one of the most international communities in Spain.
British, Irish, Scandinavian, Dutch, Belgian, German and many other European nationalities have made the Costa Blanca South their home, either permanently or for part of the year.
And cricket already has an established following in the region.
So the idea of creating a dedicated facility isn’t quite as strange as it might sound.
What makes this project particularly interesting is its potential scale.
Rather than simply providing a small recreational pitch, the proposal is for a substantial sporting facility that could potentially bring organised cricket, competitions and visiting teams to Orihuela Costa.
From Holiday Destination to International Community
This is perhaps the most interesting part of the story.
Orihuela Costa has changed enormously over the past few decades.
What was once primarily associated with holiday homes and summer tourism has developed into a genuinely international residential community.
There are now established schools, medical services, supermarkets, shopping centres, restaurants, sports facilities and year-round communities.
Playa Flamenca itself is already a popular residential area, located close to the beaches and La Zenia Boulevard and attracting homeowners from numerous countries.
A major cricket facility would be another indication of how the area is evolving.
The Costa Blanca isn’t simply somewhere people come for two weeks in August anymore. For many people, it’s home.
Could It Bring More Than Cricket?
This is where things get really interesting.
A properly developed cricket ground could potentially attract players and supporters from outside the immediate area.
Imagine weekend matches, visiting clubs, tournaments and international teams.
That could mean more people staying in local accommodation, eating in local restaurants and spending money in local businesses.
And it could give Orihuela Costa another sporting attraction alongside its already extensive golf, padel, tennis, cycling and watersports scene.
For a region that is keen to develop its tourism offering beyond the traditional sun-and-sea model, that’s potentially significant.
But Not Everyone Is Excited
And here’s the part that makes this more than just another local development story.
The proposed cricket facility has divided opinion locally, with the scale and nature of the project prompting debate among residents.
That is perhaps inevitable whenever a large piece of land is earmarked for a new use.
Some residents see the potential for a fantastic new sporting facility that could benefit the community.
Others have questions about traffic, noise, parking and how the site will be used.
Those are legitimate questions — and they will be important as the project progresses.
What Could It Mean for Property in Playa Flamenca?
This is where the story becomes particularly interesting for homeowners.
Nobody can say that a new cricket ground will automatically increase property prices — and we certainly wouldn’t make that claim.
But desirable residential areas tend to benefit from having a wider range of amenities and activities nearby.
For international families, having sporting facilities within the community can be a genuine attraction.
For people who already enjoy cricket, it could be particularly appealing.
And for the wider area, another facility capable of attracting visitors and events could add to the increasingly year-round nature of Orihuela Costa.
The key will be how the facility is ultimately developed and operated.
A Sign of How Much Orihuela Costa Is Changing
Perhaps the biggest story isn’t actually the cricket.
It’s what the cricket ground represents.
Orihuela Costa is continuing to evolve.
New homes are being built, existing communities are being upgraded and new leisure and sporting facilities are being introduced.
At the same time, major projects are changing the landscape around Playa Flamenca and Punta Prima, including the long-awaited development of the final undeveloped stretch of coastline in the area.
The result is an area that looks very different from the Orihuela Costa of 20 or 30 years ago.
And now, apparently, it has cricket.
